View from Brearley Upper Lock, near Mytholmroyd

This is the view from Brearley Upper Lock No 6 on the Rochdale Canal looking west towards Mytholmroyd, near Hebden Bridge, Calderdale, West Yorkshire.

The image was shot as a bracketed HDR set at 3:50pm on the 3rd August 2022 and developed using On1 Photo RAW.

Telephoto Landscapes

This photo was shot at 110mm APS-C (35mm format equivalent of 165mm) as part of my ongoing study of using telephoto focal lengths in landscape photography, which I’m rather enjoying.

Composition

With this composition, I have foreground, mid-ground and background. Having all three is often unattainable at telephoto focal lengths. Furthermore, the foreground frames the subjects, and the path leads the eye to the cottages – all positive components of a compelling landscape photo.

And the compression, at this focal length, has made it possible to totally exclude the factory/ warehouse unit on the left. You would never know it was there!

Development

Having developed the image with On1 and exported to a Jpeg for publishing here, I did notice that the output was rather soft. I suppose I’m used to developing files shot with my Sony 10-18mm, which must be much sharper than the 55 to 210mm kit lens. So this time, before uploading, I applied a small amount of output sharpening. I may go back and review other recent photos I’ve taken with this lens in light of this.

I’ve taken my time developing this image. My workflow has changed with my circumstances over the years and with the plethora of photo processing options now available.

Having done most of the basic development, I give my eyes a rest. I then return to an image, sometimes several times over a period, and add more refinement.
