Photography and thoughts from tutor emeritus, Peter Finch.

Woodland Wall and Path

This is one of those lucky finds that couldn’t be planned or predicted. It’s a path leading away from the main subject – High Tarn near Finsthwaite, in the Lake District.

The image was captured as a single RAW file at 2:35pm on the 19th of May 2023 and developed with On1 Photo RAW.

Pragmatism

As soon as I saw this view, I thought it would make a good photo. And I’m quite pleased with the results.

When I got back from the photo walk at High Tarn and started to look at the day’s photos, I thought it somewhat ironic that a photo of a path next to a half-dilapidated wall seemed to be the best shot, rather than one featuring the tarn.

I may publish a shot of the tarn itself yet, but this image had to be done first.

I suppose this is typical of my approach. I never plan a shot, and I certainly don’t shoot in the golden hour. I just go out, observe and work with what I find. I don’t care if a scene would look just great under the right lighting conditions. If it’s not worthy when I’m there, I’m not going back when the light is different.

Development

As with my previous post, Trees, Light and lake at Englethwaite Hall, I payed particular attention to the colours, optimising the way they complement each other. Of course, a lot of dodging and burning was done to emphasise the prominence of the main components of the composition and textures, together with the usual development techniques and effects Photo RAW has to offer.

Gill

The walk up to the tarn is quite long and steep. But Gill managed it all well, despite her post-stroke problems with stamina.
