Post, Heather and Rocks at Porth Namarch

This is one of the many lovely shoreside views at Breakwater Country Park, Holyhead, Anglesey, in Wales.

The photo was taken at approximately 3pm on the 20th July 2023 and developed from a single RAW file with On1 Photo RAW.

We holiday mostly every year at Cae Mawr Caravan and Motorhome Club site at Marian-Glas near Benllech and like to visit Breakwater Country Park on a day that has a good weather forecast.

Positivity and Pragmatism After Stroke

It’s about a 30-minute drive, and Gill and I usually spend an hour walking along the shoreside footpath with our little dog, Ruby ๐Ÿ•, whilst I observe and take photos. We used to spend more time and walk further before Gill’s stroke, but often now it’s better for her not to walk so far.

Composition and Planning

Mostly I like to shoot close and ultra-wide, and with this recent shot, I planned for vertical perspective correction, allowing plenty of space for the foreground-featured post to be straightened.

With architectural images, I particularly pursue converging verticals as a feature. Here though, looking down rather than upwards, the verticals were diverging – leaning outwards, which I mostly think to be unpleasing.

Is it the Same Scene?

The scene appears to be one I’ve photographed in 2017, back when I was teaching photography (and using Adobe Lightroom!). But the landscape and foreground post seem different.

The foreground and landscape features have changed a little naturally over the past 6 years, and the tide was higher in the recent shot.

The post, if it is the same scene, was broken and jagged in 2017, but in my recent image, it has been made safe.

The 2017 photo is a different composition, and I hadn’t planned for correcting verticals. But this doesn’t seem to be a problem, as this photo hasn’t been shot as close and tight as the recent one.

Time Moves On

The 2017 image was one of my best at the time, but I think 6 years of further experience and development software progression have resulted in the recent image being an improvement on the earlier one in many respects.
